Between Concerts, Couple Pursues Passion for Public Radio

Lynda and Paul Bluestein

Considering Lynda and Paul Bluestein's concert schedule, it's a wonder they have time for anything else.

"We've been to five concerts in the past eight days," Lynda says, describing a blues band, a choral group performing Bernstein, and an "all my exes live in Texas" themed show, among others. The couple loves taking in the arts together—going to the theater about 50 times and concerts 100 times annually—and performing themselves in bands and choral groups.

"I spend a lot of time in darkened rooms with strangers enjoying the arts," Lynda jokes.

Lynda spent her working days enjoying classical music on WSHU at the office. And though she and Paul are now retired from careers in health care and beyond, Lynda says WSHU remains something she has valued greatly since she arrived in Connecticut from California about 26 years ago.

She arrived already a fan of public radio, which she values for its in-depth discussions, but what she didn't know was that the WSHU community would become such a big part of her social life. She and Paul run into WSHU folks at the theater often and enjoy the friendships they've developed at events.

That's partly why Lynda and Paul left separate gifts in their wills to support WSHU's work.

"I'm sort of giving ahead," Lynda says. "I know how important monthly sustainers are to a station like WSHU, and I want to keep giving after I'm no longer here."
